The district centre 'Storkower Bogen' is located in a residential area in the east of Berlin. The area has approx. 50.000 inhabitants and is characterized by multi-storey prefabricated concrete plate buildings. We have designed an urbanistic ensemble that works as a meeting point for the area and is able to counteract the inhospitable feel and bare emptiness of its surroundings by a high quality urbanistic density. The site is located directly at the start of Berlin’s longest pedestrian bridge which is continued as a connection axis through the building complex, linking the eight single parts of the ensemble. A thirteen-storey “gatehouse” is the starting point. It also marks the western border of a central square which is protected from the busy traffic on the 'Storkower Strasse' by two curved buildings in the south and the east.

For the central square we created a high living quality through newly planted green areas, fountains, seats and extra areas for markets and events. The square is accessible from the street as well as from a platform which is situated above ground. It links the square to the pedestrian bridge and the connecting axis. The shops, cafes and restaurants that are situated here create a lively atmosphere when combined with the residential spaces in the upper storeys. This leads to a mixture of different aspects of daily life, which in this case have melted into a healthy new centre for the entire district.
